  • Overview

    The Global Systems Engineer III, under the general direction from the Global Platforms Manager, and technical leads, will focus on the support of critical services, with an emphasis on becoming a subject matter expert on more than one. Additionally, these engineers will focus on sustainability and improvement of processes, including any or all of the following duties: environment architecture / re-architecture along with task automation to improve process efficiency, basic project management tasks, mentorship of lower level engineers, documenting managed environments, evening and weekend deployments, maintenance of ticketing queues, audit and compliance remediation, balancing multiple projects across more than one team, and senior escalation for afterhours production issues. This individual will also become familiar with all compliance, regulatory and security requirements adhering to all corporate policies and standards. This person needs to be experienced in technology with good planning and coordination skills. An energetic, solution minded personality with drive, attention to details and excellent communication skills will be needed for success in this position.


    Job Duties

    • Collaborates with external and internal customers to analyze information needs and functional requirements and deliver the artifacts as needed.
    • Must have high attention to detail, be well organized and be a self-starter.
    • Must be able to work with limited to moderate direct supervision.
    • Contributes to the development of RFPs/SOWs and participates in the vendor selection process.
    • Uses a broad and deep understanding of technical concepts in multiple specialized fields to develop solutions to problems and critical design issues.
    • Escalates complex or consequential issues to management.
    • Identifies and directs changes through appropriate review and approval mechanisms.
    • Understands and promotes the GM Financial policy on Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) to ensure ongoing adherence to all relevant compliance regulations that may govern the GM Financial business and complete all regulatory knowledge training where applicable in a timely fashion.
    • Advanced Linux and Windows operating system and applications support.
    • Advanced troubleshooting at the OS, application, and web services tiers.
    • Capacity to mentor and lead lower level engineers as needed.
    • Become subject matter expert in more than one environment within GMF’s critical applications infrastructure.
    • Management of a subset of servers, and application environments critical to business processing. This includes working with application teams responsible for hosted apps, performing application and OS updates as needed, and maintaining server security and compliance as required by corporate policy and standards.
    • Basic management of virtual IPs within load balancing environment that supports critical processes.
    • Code deployments: IIS 7.x/8x, Apache, Tibco BusinessWorks, and general JVM code updates; a willingness to perform deployments late at night, and sometimes on weekends.
    • Code deployment documentation remediation; working with application developers to tweak and refine deployment process as needed prior to execution.
    • Lead multiple projects simultaneously, engaging with project management office as needed.
    • Capacity to architect / re-architect services or solutions in order to improve processes and maximize efficiency.
    • Periodic platform upgrades as needed, both on the OS and application tier.
    • Assist other engineers, technical leads, and management with performance analysis, process improvement, task automation, and systems capacity planning.
    • Creation and updating of architectural documentation as needed.
    • Capacity to work with a high degree of professionalism, engaging multiple teams internal and external to Information Technology.
    • Participate in company provided training and perform independent training and research as appropriate.
    • Install system patches and application updates as directed.
    • Participate in an on-call support rotation for providing after-hours support.
    • Working ticketing system incident and change management queue as needed.



    • Knowledge and understanding of industry trends and new technologies and ability to apply this to day-to-day work activities
    • Knowledge of enterprise platforms and operating systems as well as knowledge of key business functions and processes
    • Knowledge of public cloud platforms, services, functions and processes.
    • Windows Server support, including local user/group management, security policy, task scheduler, event logs, performance monitoring, group policy, powershell remoting, file/share permissions.
    • Linux Server platform support and related tasks. (Any “LAMP stack” experience a plus.)
    • Troubleshooting knowledge, utilizing packet sniffers, Fiddler, log parsers, and other utilities relative to problem diagnosis and remediation.
    • VMware virtualization concepts, and the SAN technologies that often support it.
    • Internally developed applications, and cross platform integration of such apps.
    • Websphere MQ, MSMQ, and other middle-tier messaging technologies/methodologies.
    • Tibco BusinessWorks, and other Tibco products.
    • Web services, Java virtual machines, and the applications that run with these technologies.
    • JVM performance tuning and monitoring (java heaps, garbage collection settings, JMX, etc.)
    • IIS 7.x and 8.x configurations and application pools; familiarity with the various authentication configurations within IIS, particularly the implementation of Kerberos.
    • Multiple web server environments, running behind a load balancer.
    • Intermediate to advanced scripting knowledge, particularly with Windows Powershell 2.x or higher.
    • BIG-IP F5 load balancing with an understanding of how applications behave differently within such infrastructures; capacity to tweak VIPs to optimize web traffic (working closely with our F5 team).
    • Apache web services configuration and optimization.
    • Certificate services and how to configure SSL in either IIS or Apache.
    • Configuration Management, particularly any experience with Puppet, Chef, or Ansible.
    • Experience in dealing with multiple business units and diverse employee population.
    • Experience working in 200+ server environment

    • Bachelor's Degree in computer science or equivalent work experience in IT
    • Minimum 6 years of experience managing combined managing Windows or Linux servers and/or related infrastructure preferred

    Work Condition
