  • Overview

    The Global Windows Core Application Engineer, under the general direction of the Global Windows Core Services Manager, will assist in the day-to-day tasks critical to the team's success including the planning, design, implementation, and support of Windows Server and Application platforms. This team member is responsible primarily for the application support and the direct management of the servers to support the core Windows Services. This individual will become thoroughly familiar with all compliance, regulatory and security requirements adhering to all corporate policies and standards. An energetic, solution minded personality with drive, attention to details and excellent communication skills will be needed for success in this position. Additionally, this person will focus on implementation and improvement of processes plus any or all of the following duties: documenting managed environments, basic project management tasks, evening and weekend deployments, maintenance of ticketing queues and after hours on call.

    Responsibilities

    JOB DUTIES

    • Proactively identifies opportunities for improvements to existing processes and for automation of time consuming tasks.
    • Plan, prioritize, and provide vision and schedules for assigned software and / or hardware changes.
    • Attend departmental, project and general meetings and effectively represent current status as appropriate.
    • Effectively communicates current status of all projects, problems, and issues to the department management team.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain automated processes using PowerShell or equivalent scripting language.
    • Study and analyze the performance and capacities of the systems and peripheral equipment/systems and prepare plans for future expansion and upgrades.
    • Must be able to work with limited to moderate direct supervision, and the ability to work independently.
    • Contributes to the development of RFPs/SOWs and participates in the vendor selection process.
    • Uses a broad and deep understanding of technical concepts in multiple specialized fields to develop solutions to problems and critical design issues.
    • Resolves most conflicts between timeline, budget, and scope independently but intuitively
    • Identifies and directs changes through appropriate review and approval mechanisms.
    • Maintain ServiceNow change and incident queue, closing tickets in a timely manner with appropriate documentation and change management queue. Working ticketing system incident and change management queue as needed.
    • General Windows Operating System and third-party application support.
    • Periodic platform upgrades as needed, both on the OS and application tier.
    • Support various teams with the installation, configuration, and support of departmental third-party applications.
    • Install system patches and application updates as directed.
    • Respond to compliance assessments and initiate corrective action when appropriate for audit and compliance remediation.
    • Identify and evaluate third party vendors, technology, or processes for integration with GM Financials technology and equipment.
    • Assist other engineers with performance analysis, process improvement, task automation, and systems capacity planning.
    • Assist with creation and updating of architectural documentation as needed.
    • Capacity to work with a high degree of professionalism, communicating effectively and appropriately.
    • Attend departmental, project and general meetings and effectively represent current status as appropriate.
    • Participate in company provided training and perform independent training and research as appropriate.
    • The candidate must be willing to accommodate weekend, shift or on-call schedules when necessary, and participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge

    • Knowledge and understanding of industry trends and new technologies and ability to apply this to day-to-day work activities
    • Knowledge of enterprise platforms and operating systems as well as knowledge of key business functions and processes.
    • Knowledge of Windows Server 2008R2, 2012R2 and 2016 support, including local user/group management, security policy, task scheduler, event logs, PowerShell remoting, file/share permissions.
    • Troubleshooting knowledge, utilizing packet sniffers, Fiddler, log parsers, and other utilities relative to problem diagnosis and remediation.
    • VMware virtualization concepts, and the SAN technologies that often support it.
    • Web services, Java virtual machines, and the applications that run with these technologies.
    • IIS 7.x and 8.x configurations and application pools; familiarity with the various authentication configurations within IIS.
    • Apache web services.
    • Certificate services and how to configure SSL in either IIS or Apache.
    • Working experience with scripting languages, particularly PowerShell; a general understanding of the most common cmdlets, and familiarity with advanced scripting concepts.
    • Knowledge of Windows Remote Desktop Services deployment, maintenance and troubleshooting.
    • A strong willingness to learn, and accept instruction. Capacity to take initiative, and the desire to be a self-starter. Ability to accept change and adapt to shifting priorities

    Skills

    • Expert knowledge of Windows Server and Desktop operating systems
    • Scripting languages, particularly PowerShell.
    • Troubleshooting skills utilizing packet sniffers, Fiddler, log parsers, and other utilities relative to problem diagnosis and remediation.
    • Advanced knowledge of Active Directory and Windows networking technologies
    • Willingness to find problems and come up with creative solutions.
    • Willingness to become a ‘subject matter expert’ in multiple application support areas.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to think strategically and perform risk analysis.
    • Possess critical thinking and analytical skills. Able to think and react positively and professionally even in stressful situations.

    Education

    • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or equivalent work experience in IT preferred

    Experience

    • 0-2 Years Experience working in 200+ server environment enterprise
    • Experience in dealing with multiple business units and diverse employee population. Preferred
    • 3-5 Years managing Windows Application Servers Required
    • 5-7 Years experience in information technology.
      experience managing Windows Server infrastructure. Required

    Work Condition

    • Normal office environment; may be stressful at times. There may be a requirement to occasionally work a flexible schedule with the possibility of working long hours.
