Overview

The Windows Systems Application Engineer II, under the general direction from the Microsoft Platforms Manager and senior engineers, will focus primarily on code deployments, application support and the direct management of the systems that support these business critical services. These duties may include any and all of the following: documenting managed environments, evening and weekend deployments, maintenance of ticketing queues, audit and compliance remediation, process improvement, task automation, balancing multiple projects across more than one team, and after hours on call duties.

Responsibilities

JOB DUTIES

  • Working ticketing system incident and change management queue as needed.
  • Intermediate to advanced Windows operating system and applications support.
  • Become thoroughly familiar with all compliance and security requirements, adhering to all corporate policies and standards.
  • Management of a subset of servers, and application environments critical to business processing. This includes working with application teams responsible for hosted apps, performing application and OS updates as needed, and maintaining server security and compliance as required by corporate policy and standards.
  • Basic management of virtual IPs within load balancing environment that supports critical processes.
  • Code deployments: IIS 7.x/8x, Apache, Tibco BusinessWorks, and general JVM code updates; a willingness to perform deployments late at night, and sometimes on weekends.
  • Code deployment documentation remediation; working with application developers to tweak and refine deployment process as needed prior to execution.
  • Periodic platform upgrades as needed, both on the OS and application tier.
  • Respond to compliance assessments and initiate corrective action when appropriate.
  • Assist senior engineers, technical leads, and management with performance analysis, process improvement, task automation, and systems capacity planning.
  • Creation and updating of architectural documentation as needed.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately, deferring to management on communicating with external teams as needed.
  • Capacity to work with a high degree of professionalism, engaging multiple teams internal and external to Information Technology.
  • Attend departmental, project and general meetings and effectively represent current status as appropriate.
  • Participate in company provided training and perform independent training and research as appropriate.
  • Install system patches and application updates as directed.  
  • Participate in an on-call support rotation for providing after-hours support,

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to: Microsoft Platforms Manager

Qualifications

Knowledge

  • Windows Server 2008 and 2012 support, including local user/group management, security policy, task scheduler, event logs, performance monitoring, group policy, powershell remoting, file/share permissions.
  • VMware virtualization concepts, and the SAN technologies that often support it.
  • Internally developed applications, and cross platform integration of such apps.
  • Middle-tier message infrastructures (like MSMQ or MQ).
  • Tibco BusinessWorks, and other Tibco products.
  • Web services, Java virtual machines, and the applications that run with these technologies.
  • IIS 7.x and 8.x configurations and application pools; familiarity with the various authentication configurations within IIS.
  • Scripting languages, particularly PowerShell; at least a general understanding of cmdlets like get-member, and familiarity with basic scripting concepts.
  • BIG-IP F5 load balancing with an understanding of how applications behave differently within such infrastructures.
  • Apache web services.
  • Certificate services and how to configure SSL in either IIS or Apache.

Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience managing Windows servers and/or related infrastructure preferred.
  • Experience working in 200+ server environment preferred.
  • Technical degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Job related certifications preferred.

 

WORK CONDITION

Normal office environment; may be stressful at times. There may be a requirement to occasionally work a flexible schedule with the possibility of working long hours.
